Musicians need to be P.R.O.F.E.S.S.I.O.N.A.L

As a musician I recently heard some great advice from a drumming living legend, Mike Michalkow. He has been doing some great work with the guys from RailRoad Media Inc, Drumeo.com and Freedrumminglessons.com as a drum teacher/tutor and professional drummer.  In one of his own video lessons, he explained the importance of being professional as a musician. Below is the word: PROFESSIONAL and how we can use it as an acronym for important things to remember, especially when song-writing, rehearsing or gigging

P - Prepare: Know your music, your craft and your set list
R - Reliable: Always be dependable
O - On time: Always be punctual and on time.
F - Flexible: Be easy to work with and accept new ideas
E - Eager: Be excited about your craft, music and what you are playing
S - Serious: You need to be serious about what you are doing for it to succeed
S - Soulful: Always bring the groove
I - Intuition: Listen to your intuition. It will guide you through the toughest times
O - Optimistic: Always remain positive.
N - Never Give Up: Perseverance is indeed everything
A - Appearance, Attitude: This stands for two things to remember. Always look the part, and always act the part
L - Love what you do: This is the reason we do what we do. Let it show

Advice when starting on the drum kit

Hey Guys and Girls,

This morning I received a message from one of my very best friends and almost family member, Kevin S Flee. He has been dabbling on the drum kit and asked me on some advice for the below.

1. Bass drum rudiments

2. Limb independence exercises
3. Drum rehearsal : what should i be practicing ?

I have decided to share with you what I had sent him and you can take this to your drum pad or drum kit and apply the below. The concept to remember behind drumming, is that once we have mastered muscle memory and the control of our limbs, then everything else falls in to place with the correct amount of practice on speed and control. For me the best thing that I developed and have been working on is my technique. Hand technique offers that you play just with your wrists while keeping your shoulders and arms relaxed. You can practice a single stroke roll which is R L R L by using the up and down motion of only your wrist.

Rudiments:

Here is a site that will help you with drum rudiments (amongst other things). Remember that the same in the english language, rudiments are letters that make up words and then words make up sentences. Keep in mind that playing drums is talking through an instrument and one should also play soft (whisper), play loud (shout) and then talk normally.

http://www.drumlessons.com/category/drum-lessons/drum-set-rudiments/

When playing these drum rudiments, focus on each beat and if you can organize a metronome that would be fantastic. The aim is to play each stroke consistently with one another and also taking into account your technique by only using your wrists.

Limb Independence exercises:

Here you can take the rudiments that you have learn't and take them, firstly, to one surface (snare, pad) and then onward to a full drum kit. Incorporating groups of one, two, three and four using each limb. Play these to a metronome and start off slow and slowly increase your bpm (beats per minute) by 10 bpm as you get more accurate. Also focus on each limb using only wrists and make sure that each stroke is clear, consistent and on time.

For example: (RH: Right hand, LH: Left hand, RF: Right Foot, LF: Left foot)

Use single stroke roll:
Groups of Four:  RH RH RH RH, LH LH LH LH, RF RF RF RF, LF LF LF LF
Groups of Three: RH RH RH, LH LH LH, RF RF RF, LF LF LF
Groups of Two:   RH RH, LH LH, RF RF, LF LF
Groups of One:   RH, LH, RF, LF

Another great exercise is to incorporate subdivisions, so for instance,

Quarter notes: 1 2 3 4
8 notes: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
16 notes: 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a

Count these out loud and use a metronome. Then use the above independence exercises

Example:

Quarter notes:
1     2     3     4
RH  LH  RH  LH

8 notes:
1      &    2     &     3     &    4    &
RH   LH  RH  LH  RH  LH  RH  LH

16 notes:

1     e    &     a      2     e    &     a     3        e    &     a     4     e      &    a
RH  LH  RH  LH  RH   LH  RH   LH   RH    LH  RH   LH   RH    LH  RH   LH

Repeat this using only your feet.
And then incorporate each individual limb with this exercise. You will build speed and control.

Example:

Quarter notes:
1     2     3     4
RH  RH  RH  RH

Drum rehearsal:

The most important thing when sitting down to play, is to formulate a goal and learn something new at every sitting. A lot of people sit down and rehearse for hours on end but only repeat the same exercises and grooves and never develop further. All you need is 15 minutes a day and if used constructively you can achieve much more than by sitting for hours on end doing the same things over. When I sit down to practice, I work on my weak areas. This would be in the form of practicing my reading, moving around the drum kit, technique and limb independence, rudiments, working on my groove, accuracy and feel. I also put a lot of emphasis on being creative with fills and overall building muscle memory. If you are starting off, I would spend some time on using click and playing rudiments, the above exercises on a single surface, and then moving around the kit. All this starting from a low tempo and upping the speed by 10bpm as you go. Also work on counting out aloud and this will make it easier for you when learning notation.

I hope this helps you with your goals on improving your skills behind the drum kit,

See you soon !

Back to the Blog !

Hey Guys & Gals,

It has been a very long time since my last post. Things sure have been busy in the Storm Awesome camp. Recent developments have lead us to opening up two more divisions in The Storm Awesome Project. We now have a running Rehearsal Room with PA and mics and skeleton kit. We have some great bands that have started rehearsing there and next year we are looking at some new ideas. We have also opened up Storm Awesome Drum Tuition catering for beginner to intermediate drum lessons. I have added some links to photos at the bottom of this link so that you can check photos of the Rehearsal Room/Tuition space. I have also gotten affiliated with House Of Rock who specialize in tuition of guitar, bass, vocal and drums and I will be their Edenvale satellite.

This month has sure been one for shows too. Energy Related had their first show on the 5th September at Tanz Cafe. The show was organized by Wired Sound Studios who recorded our recent album. The response we received was super intense and from now we are looking at doing a lot more shows so keep a look out.

I have also started sessioning back with my ole' time mates The Carniwhores. We have done a show recently with Fuzigish which literally brought the roof of Rumours down. I have never seen that place so packed before. We also supported Low Profile up from Durban on their Vulgar Tour and played at the new Riderz Bar & Grill in Edenvale. And last week we did a "back to the Bo" show. I have heard our recently mastered tracks and as a warning I will say this will blow your head off.

Jenna Sighed has been busy in rehearsals with a game plan of some new songs. All of which are challenging, intense and magical. We have some shows set up for October as well as looking to get in studio as a live band. So definitely looking forward to the future vibes !

Thanks for reading and I will try my best to post a little more often. Please check out the links below of people I support and people who support me, above that of just being awesome. Check out all my other projects I do as well as my youtube channel !

Cracker !

Hey Guys and Gals,

The time has come for another Storm Awesome post. Once again it has been a cracker of a week and good things, or should I say great things are coming your way ! Firstly, lets start with Energy Related. As you know, we have been in studio recording the re-release of The Strings of Life Album which was recorded recently at Wired Sound Studios. I had the pleasure of taking photos this past Sunday for the Album cover and art work. We had three areas planned out and on our quest to peruse each location we were unexpectedly interrupted by numerous squatters wanting to get in on our photo shoot. This happened for the first two locations and by the third one, we were able to find a masterpiece for shooting without any photo bombers. Keep a look out on this shoot ! This Sunday I am also doing a photo shoot with Donovan Fourie in the launch of his new solo project: Tha Don. Really looking forward to the idea we have for this and no doubt the solo vibes from Don are going to be off the hook.

Next up, Jenna Sighed has been in full force recently playing many venues and getting our sound out there. We recently did a show at The Doors which was filmed using a GoPro drum cam. Courtesy of Garret Richardson from Flying Floyd Productions. This has gotten my Youtube channel going and features work I have done with other bands: The Carniwhores, Sloppy Folk, Submachine and The Death Valley Blues Band.  I am going to be keeping it updated with more live footage from gigs and perhaps some percussive solo's and some online lessons. This is all in the pipeline. Please feel free to watch my videos and subscribe to my channel for further updates.

You can also catch Jenna Sighed this Saturday at Emalyth's event: The Apostle Lament.
The Show is at Black Dahlia, Boksburg and doors open at 1pm. So you can catch a cocktail on the deck before watching the bands starting from 3pm. We will be on from 5pm. Hope to catch ya all there.

Thanks for reading and I have some very exciting things happening. Follow me on any social media, this blog and Youtube channel to catch a whiff of what The Awesome is cooking !

See ya soon and be sure to check out all the links below to the pages of people who are Awesome :)

The Birthday Month

Hey Guys and Girls !

It is The Awesome here again for another Awesome post. My last post was entitled "Party on to July". And  July has definitely been that Party. The beginning of the month started off with a bang as Jenna Sighed and myself roadtripped our way down to Rustenburg. We had a show at the newly formed Step Up Club. Wesley our bassist and myself took a ride in Dirty Sanchez (My little Tata). So with our bags packed and cars loaded we left on Saturday afternoon, the 7th. The two hour trip went quickly what with my metal compilation disc turning and our conversations changing subjects we finally arrived. Rustenburg is such a great town and the main reason in my eyes is the friendly people. After our arrival and the unpacking of gear we went upstairs to the venue and were presented with a huge band room to set up our gear and keep all our hardware bags and cases there. We played the show and Wesley and myself tackled the road back to Jozi. It truly was a magical show !

A day later I received a call from my friend Zam Boney. A lot of you may know him through the Slashdogs or Carniwhores but for those of you that don't know. He is currently jamming for Jet Black Camaro. Now this band knows how to rock. Their drummer Fano had to work last Friday in some one horse town and could not make the show at the Bohemian. So I got a call to stand in and "dep" for them for a one off show. The show featured The Stellas album launch for their new EP, Live Charge and consisted of Black Math from Durban. In preparation for this show, I had one week to learn 10 songs from their set. We had a rehearsal to run through the tunes on Wednesday and Friday right before the show. No pressure :) I got the 10 songs down with their structure, feel and tempo. Then just the little problem areas such as counts from one pause to another and when do I come in and we had it down.
Friday night was a great party filled to the brim with rock n' roll, dance moves and honey.

For things to come, I am doing a show with Jenna Sighed on the 28th July. It is an Emalyth show - The Apostle's Lament. Rumours Lounge. I am pasting the facebook event at the bottom of this post.
Also, in the pipeline is two photo shoots for Donovan Fourie (from Energy Related). He is going to be launching some solo vibes too. This will be called The Don. Very interested to hear this and be a part of the photography team.

That's all for this week from The Awesome. Thanks for reading this and hope to catch you at a show, a shoot or someplace else

PS. Thank you to everyone for the lovely birthday messages, wishes, presents and hugs ! (For last week)

Party on to July

Hey Guys and Gals,

Welcome to another post by The Awesome. So whats news and what has been happening. Last weekend, was definitely in the "whats happening" section. I did some shows with Jenna Sighed. Friday was Part 1 of The Battle for Woodstock. The Battle was held at Boston Rock Lounge in Edenvale and brought together a sweet selection of Joburg's finest. It has been a while since I have been at Boston's and noticed quite a few changes and improvements made. I also got to see some old friends who I have not seen for some time. The evening was truly nostalgic. For those of you who have not been here, it is one of the few venues with an upper stage for the drummer. I had the best seat in the house as I could look down on the band and watch people dancing, sipping on their beers and having a great time.

Saturday morning I had a photo shoot with the boys from Because of Betrayal. The lads are really cool guys and we walked out there with close to 400 shots. They were all prepared with change of outfit and instruments in hand along with some beautiful Albion amps. You can check out these edited photos soon on my Photography page listed below. They will be up in due time.

Saturday night I played with Jenna Sighed at the Doors Nightclub. Organized and run by Black Apple Productions, the show dubbed "Punk VS Metal" was a great success. The line up featured talented bands and the sound and lighting provided by Bomb Squad was mind blowing. I had my buddy there, Garrett Richardson. We set up a GoPro camera to get some "drum cam" shots. He also did some other shots of the bands as a whole. We are going to get this all edited and I will be able to show you all once it is completed.

Things really have been busy lately and I am looking at putting something very special together quite soon. I don't want to give too many details out now but when the time is right, I will let the cat out. This Saturday I am road tripping my way to Rustenburg. We are playing at the Step Up Club which I have never been to, but have heard awesome things. The last time I played in Rustenburg, I did two sets in succession with Submachine and Death Valley Blue Band respectively. It was on a Coca Cola truck and the party was intense. And no doubt, this will be the same (with the exception of the truck).

I want to give a BIG Shout out to my Endorsees, Music Mate for always being so kind and awesome to me. I can be found under their website now under their Endorsee list. And with next week Wednesday being my Birthday I am going to swing past their Parkmeadows branch and grab me some new toys !

Well that's it for this week from The Awesome. It is almost Friday and the weekend is here soon !
Have a great one folks !

The Awesome Weekend

Hey Guys and Gals,

Welcome to my second post on my newly found blog. I have decided to bring out posts more often than once a month. This is so I don't forget the very things I feel I want to detail. So with that being said, Lets get started.

This past weekend was a busy one for me. On Saturday night I performed with Jenna Sighed and we did an Emalyth gig - Lure of Shadows. Situated at Rumours Lounge in Weltevreden Park, the show started off at about 6. Despite the cold air outside, it was certainly warm inside. The sound was clear and loud and for a minute I couldn't differentiate between my heart beat and the bass thumping. It was now our time and Jenna Sighed leaped on stage after setting up with a certain quickness and after doing a nice little line check we hit our set. It was definitely fun and our first Emalyth show seemed to be enjoyed by the folk at Rumours. We will be doing another Emalyth show on the 28th July and I will be sure to keep you all posted.

Also on Saturday, the boys from Energy Related went into Wired Sound Studios and finished off the guitars and bass. They pulled off a 12 hour shift and Sunday was my time to join them. We finished off the drumming to two tracks and then started on the lead and backing vocals. This was fun as I normally don't sing at all. After a grueling day and a two pies and coke special lunch break, we finished and it was declared "a wrap". Now its just the post production to wait for. Exciting stuff.

This Friday marks our arrival (Jenna Sighed) at Boston Rock Lounge where we will take part in the Battle of Woodstock Pt 1. Pull in and check us out. I have posted the event just below. Also this Saturday we arrive at  the Doors Nightclub to take part in the Punk VS Metal gig. Brought to you by Black Apple Productions. We are on at 18:30 and I have organized a great friend of mine Garrett Richardson to come and film me with a GoPro to do some "drum cam" shots as well as some other Awesome angles :)

I am also doing a photo shoot for Because of Betrayal. My other great friend Lionel Lodewick from Tutto Fotografia has let me use his studio this Saturday while mine is under renovations. These lads are really cool and their music is technical and brutal. Keep a look out for them at a show near you.

So that is all from the Awesome this week, hope you enjoyed it :)
I'm sure I will see you at a gig, photo shoot or somewhere else.

PS. Also be sure to check out a Music Mate store near you. They are currently having a Clearance Sale this whole week up until Saturday the 30th June. So DON'T MISS OUT !
